According Russian migration law (Federal law №42 from March 20, 2011 came into force on March 25, 2011) every foreign national who comes to Russian Federation must have his/her Russian visa registered within 7 business days upon arrival, excluding official holidays and weekends.
What is a Registration of visa
Registration of visa is it a relic of the Soviet time. At Soviet Union for to make sure, what citizen not going to occupy the territory of country without authorities' permission.
Today, the purpose of the registration is to notify the UFMS (Federal Migration Service Organisation) about the place of your stay (an exact address) on the territory of the Russian. Migration Card, which you fill out on the plane before you arrived to Russia not suffice for legal staying in Russia, it is just first step. The registration is a totally different thing and should be done separately, after your arrive.In UFMS foreign citizen get a special piece of paper that confirms his/her registration has been submitted.

For making registration in Russian Federation, foreign citizen need next documents:
1. a copy of the important information pages of your passport (showing your name, birth date, passport number, and expiry date)
2. a copy of the prolongation page of your passport (if applicable)
3. a copy of your valid Russian visa
4. a copy of your Russian migration card
Additional documents (need at specific situations):
1. your tickets (train, bus, plane tickets) to the place you're in (If you spent for trip inside country more than 7 business days before coming to this place)
2. copy of detachable part of the old registrations notification (If that don't first your registration at this visit)

Important legal information about registration of Russian visas!
Only the detachable part of the notification with the mark of UFMS or Russian post office is evidence of the proper Russian visa registration. Foreign national must always to keep this paper with them to confirm that his/her visa to Russia was duly registered.
If a foreigner visits another part of Russian Federation for more than 7 business days he/she must to register Russian visa once again in that place and re-register visa once again on his or her return to the initial destination.
The registration period of Russian visa can not exceed 3 months after the date of foreigner's arrival in Russia (this date is stamped on your migration card and in your passport at the border) and/or the expiration date of your valid Russian visa.
If you are holder of long-term multi-entry Russian business visa or you are going to order Russian business visa invitation please note that you must to register your Russian visa every time, when you cross Russian border and get new Russian Migration card.
We advice you have copies of the passport, Russian visa, Russian migration card and detachable part of the notification. In case of loss of their originals or any other unforeseen circumstances, copies would help to confirm that you in fact has the documents and observes the rules of Russian visa registration.
